Competitive gaming traditionally relies on standard equipment and interfaces, which can present operational barriers for players with disabilities. To address accessibility in competitive formats, the second edition of the Adaptive Esports Summit took place on October 16–17 in Daejeon, South Korea. It was organised during the Daejeon Contents Fair and gathered accessibility experts, game designers, and esports players to talk about adaptive technology and game design for players with disabilities.

Who is behind the Adaptive Esports Summit?

The summit is sponsored by Daejeon Metropolitan City and Daejeon Information & Culture Industry Promotion Agency (DICIA). Organised by WAAG and MAUM E&A Co., it follows the precedent of the first summit conducted in December 2025 and includes an extended two-day agenda.

Equipment, Rules, and Competitive Integrity

A primary focus of the summit is the integration of specialised controllers and assistive devices within professional tournament settings. Beyond hardware availability, the discussions centered on interface design and the establishment of standardised guidelines for adaptive equipment. The summit addressed how tournament organizers can accommodate adaptive hardware while maintaining competitive integrity.

A key topic on the agenda was differentiating basic accessibility from competitive advantage. Historically, the use of adaptive technology has prompted debates over tournament fairness. Panels explored how officials can implement clear policies that define what constitutes basic access versus unpermitted automation, aiming to create a standardised regulatory approach for players with disabilities in competitive ecosystems.

Game Development and The "Serious Game" Competition

Day one of the Adaptive Esports Summit started at 15:00 KST, featuring keynotes on accessibility concepts alongside practical sessions on adaptive hardware development.

One of the key features of this year’s summit is the "Serious Game" competition, organised by the AbleGamers Charity Foundation. This project involves 10 teams of students from Woosong, Mokwon, and Baejae universities creating innovative adaptive games featuring Microsoft’s Adaptive Controller. The event also featured sessions on inclusive game design and the development of adaptive esports as a recognised competitive category. Speakers include Bryce Johnson, co-inventor of the Xbox Adaptive Controller and a principal researcher in accessibility and inclusive design at Microsoft, and Tara Voelker, co-director of GAConf and a former accessibility lead at Netflix and Microsoft.

Industry Integration and Tournaments

The summit also hosted panels focused on the business models and organizational growth of adaptive esports. A dedicated session discussed potential partnerships among federations, publishers, and brands. Participating panelists include Jorrel Batac (Founder & CEO of SXNGA, VP of USA Esports), Filip Soc (President, Savez elektronskih sportova Crne Gore), and Can Yang (CEO, DRX). In order to prove these principles in practice, there was an Adaptive Street Fighter 6 Tournament at the summit. It was created to encourage players with disabilities to participate actively in competitive gaming.

Why the Summit Matters for the Esports Industry

The summit gathered hardware developers, accessibility specialists, and esports professionals to align on the future of inclusive gaming. To build on these discussions, the industry must now focus on tangible outcomes: standardizing equipment policies, improving development testing procedures, and organizing regular competitions for gamers with disabilities.
